How AutoPASS for ferry works

What is AutoPASS for ferry?

AutoPASS for ferry is the electronic payment and discount system for Norway's national road ferries. It is run by the ferry operators together with the toll companies and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. It lets you pay automatically and receive a discount instead of paying full price on board.

You pay for the vehicle based on its length. Passengers travel free on the national road ferries.

How you pay

There are five ways to pay for a ferry crossing, and the discount depends on which one you choose:

  1. AutoPASS prepayment agreement. Gives a 50 percent discount for private customers and 40 percent for businesses. It requires you to pay an amount in advance and to link the vehicle to an AutoPASS account.
  2. AutoPASS tag without a prepayment agreement. If you have a toll tag but no prepayment agreement, you get a 10 percent discount.
  3. FerryPay. You register your plate and a payment card, and the full price is charged automatically. No discount, but no invoice fee.
  4. Invoice by post. If you do nothing, your plate is read automatically and you receive an invoice for the full price plus an invoice fee of 35 kroner.
  5. Pay on board. On staffed crossings you can pay by card on board. Many crossings are unstaffed, so this is not always possible.

How much do you prepay?

The prepayment amount depends on the vehicle's length. It is lowest for an ordinary car and increases for larger vehicles. Use the ferry calculator to see whether a prepayment agreement is worth it for your trip.

Foreign vehicle?

Foreign vehicles can use AutoPASS too. Your plate is read automatically as you drive on board. Without an agreement, an invoice is sent by post via EPASS24, with an invoice fee. To avoid the fee, you can register FerryPay before you travel, or set up a prepayment agreement if you will take many ferries.
