The 2026 summer fare explained

What is the summer fare?

The summer fare is a scheme where certain ferry connections have changed fares during the summer season. In 2026 it applies from 1 May to 31 August and covers selected connections in four counties: Møre og Romsdal, Trøndelag, Nordland and Troms.

The scheme is meant to make travel cheaper in rural areas, but it does not work the same way everywhere.

"Free after a number of crossings"

In several places the model is count-based rather than a percentage discount. One example is Nordland: there you pay for the first six crossings per connection during the period, and after that you travel free for the rest of the summer on that connection.

This means that the more often you take the same ferry, the lower your average price. If you commute or live along a connection, the trips can become free after the first ones. For a tourist who takes the ferry once or twice, the exemption does not kick in.

Passengers travel free regardless.

It varies between counties

The mechanism is not identical in all four counties. In some places there is a count threshold, in others an adjusted fare zone. So it is worth checking what applies to your specific connection. The ferry calculator accounts for the summer fare where it applies and shows what the trip actually costs during the period.
